The historic lodge resides on a 550 acre property made up of grassland, native bush, waterfalls, streams, and oceanfront.

The two forms of transport to get to the property are by boat and aeroplane (the property has a grass landing strip).

History

The lodge was built in 1908 originally as a homestead for a farmer and his family.

Since then, the lodge has been used for many purposes including a post office, a school, a tourist resort, a restaurant & bar, and a hunting & fishing lodge.

Current Operations

The lodge was acquired in 1999 by a New Zealand family.

Since then, the property is being developed to become a model of self-sufficiency.

The property has also been used as an international destination for students and other interested persons, who desire to gain practical experience in organics, ecology, and self-sufficiency.

In 2003, Tira Ora commenced running children's camps, which promote outdoor and recreational programmes.

Specialised youth programmes for 'youth-at-risk' operate at Tira Ora.  The full-time, live-in programmes run from 12 weeks at a time.
